Chiesa Nuova

We began our day dedicated to St. Philip at Santa Maria in Vallicella, also known as the "Chiesa Nuova" or the "New Church" built by St. Philip Neri.  This church is where St. Philip is buried, and after St. Philip transferred the Oratory to "Chiesa Nuova", the church became a center for liturgical and cultural renewal in Rome through the leadership of St. Philip.  We prayed the Litany to St. Philip before his tomb and asked for his intercession as we began our tour of four of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome.

Comenzamos nuestro día dedicado a San Felipe en Santa María in Vallicella, también conocida como la "Chiesa Nuova" o la "Iglesia Nueva" construida por San Felipe Neri. Esta iglesia es donde está enterrado San Felipe, y después de que San Felipe transfiriera el Oratorio a la "Chiesa Nuova", la iglesia se convirtió en un centro de renovación litúrgica y cultural en Roma gracias al liderazgo de San Felipe. Rezamos la letanía a San Felipe ante su tumba y pedimos su intercesión al comenzar nuestro recorrido por cuatro de las siete iglesias peregrinas de Roma.

Pilgrimage to Rome!

 +m Dear Friends in Christ/Queridos Amigos en Cristo,  I am on my way to Rome, Italy for a pilgrimage!  I am leading a pilgrimage inspired by my patron saint, St. Philip Neri, the "2nd Apostle of Rome."  St. Philip regularly took his devotees to a walking pilgrimage to the 7 Pilgrim Churches in Rome.  We will see all of the Pilgrim Churches which include the Major Basilicas and 3 minor basilicas of historical significance.  Unlike St. Philip, we will not be walking or doing them all in one day!  I hope to share pictures with commentary as I go, similar to the posts that I published on the pilgrimage to the Holy Land last February.  I ask for your prayers for me and my fellow travelers, which include my mother and father.  I will be keeping all of you and the parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo parish in my prayers along the way.  During the trip, I will see the church in Rome where St. Charles Borromeo's heart is preserved.  I will conclude my travels by visiting St. Cha

A tour of plazas and fountains (January 12)

The Spanish steps and the Piazza de Spagna Column and monument commemorating the Immaculate Conception.  The Holy Father comes here each December 8 to pray and to place a wreath of flowers on the statue of Our Lady.     Trevi Fountain in the Piazza di Trevi.  The fountains of Rome are where the ancient aqua ducts built by the Romans come to the surface to provide drinking water to the city.  The tradition of throwing thee coins in the fountain to come back to Rome comes from the Roman soldiers making sacrifices to the god of the river for safe travel and to return home to Rome.   Piazza di Pantheon The Pantheon, built as a cylindrical domed temple to "All the gods",  is a very unique structure.  There are no other round temples in the ancient world.  Modern science and engineering are still trying to determine how the building has remained intact after more than 2000 years.  Now the Pantheon is a church dedicated to Mary and All the Martyrs.  Michelangelo studied the Pantheon

 +m I arrived in Rome yesterday afternoon.  We are staying at a "Casa" for pilgrims run by the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Heart.  It is common that religious communities have houses of hospitality in Rome as a ministry and a way to raise funds for their congregation or order.  The lodgings are simple and perfect for the pilgrim - single beds, no TV in the room, no bar.  The house has a chapel and a great view from the 4th floor terrace.  Here is the chapel where I said Mass yesterday for the group.  Below is a picture of me and my parents on the terrace.
